Bad Breath Causes and Prevention
Everybody has bad breath from time to time. It is usually in the morning when we wake up with a dry mouth because our body does not produce enough saliva while we are sleeping. Saliva helps clean our mouth and removes particles that can cause bad odors. Bad breath is usually caused by a build up of bacteria in the mouth. The bacteria then causes inflammation that leads to bad odors. Having bad breath is very uncomfortable not only to us but also to people around us. The good news is that bad breath can be usually easily prevented and treated. Maintaining proper oral hygiene and regular check-ups and cleanings at your SE Calgary dentist can improve your breath and your oral health.
Most Common Bad Breath Causes
- Gum disease, cracked fillings, cavities and other oral problems are the most common bad breath causes. According to the research around 80% of bad breath comes from an oral source.
- Dry mouth (xerostomia) is another reason why you might experience bad breath. Dry mouth usually occurs while we are sleeping and it is an ideal environment for bacteria reproduction.
- Food. Eating certain types of food such as garlic, onion or spices can also lead to bad breath. After you digest them, they get to your bloodstream and the substance that causes bad breath goes further to the lungs. So brushing your teeth will not stop bad odor coming out from your mouth since its source will get to the lungs.
- Diseases such as metabolic disorders, lung disease, kidney disease or liver disease account for around 10% of bad breath problems.
Luckily, it is easy to prevent bad breath and contribute to your oral health at the same time. Calgary dentist – Drosu Dental recommends you take the following steps to prevent and treat bad breath.
How To Prevent Bad Breath
Brush and Floss Your Teeth Regularly
You should brush your teeth at least twice a day (in the morning and before you go to bed) and floss at least once a day. Brushing and flossing will remove plaque that builds up on the surface of your teeth. The plaque collects bacteria that cause bad breath.
Do not forget to brush your tongue since it can host the smelly bacteria. You can either
use your toothbrush and gently clean your tongue with it or you can use a tongue scraper.
A lot of bacteria that causes bad breath live on the back of your tongue where you cannot get rid of it using a toothbrush or a tongue scraper. Mouthwash will help your neutralize those bacteria and keep your mouth moist.
Rinse Your Mouth Out
Rinse your mouth with a plain water after you eat or consume beverages to remove food particles that can get stuck between your teeth.
Nobody wants to have bad breath, therefore it is important to know how to prevent it.
